BCAA stands for Branch Chain Amino Acids. They are the building blocks of not only protein, but muscle tissue itself. They play a huge role in fat loss, muscle growth, energy, recovery, mood, and brain function. There are 23 amino acids with 9 being essential: Phenylanine, Valine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Histidine, Arginine,Leucine and Lysine. Your body burns energy (Carbs and fats) when you train. Whether you do cardio, plyometrics, weight training, etc, When your body runs out of carbs and fat, it begins a process called gluconeogenisis. This is where your body begins to convert non carbohydrate sources (Aminos) into glucose for energy. This process actually strips the aminos from your muscle which is catabolic. This is why you will see and hear so many in the fitness industry (including myself) supplementing BCAA’s not just during their workout, but throughout the day! They come in many forms, I prefer powder. I add it to my daily water intake and just drink it all day.
