Family fun day at the Zoo

We chose to have our family fun day this week at St Louis Zoo! It is by far the best Zoo we have been to in the country so far! Not only because it is quite large and has many animals, but is is also one of the few FREE Zoos left in the country! I have been to quite a few in the past 10 years and none have compared to this one, well not yet anyway!

Josh and I grew up coming to this zoo, but Zoe’s first time was back in October. Zoe was one and a half and at the time we didn’t live close. We actually took a detour to visit with family and friends here while on our way to KC on a business trip. Zoe didn’t care much for looking at animals or even being at the zoo, so needless to say we walked one big loop and left. We were barely there for an hour. This is the only picture we got that day at the zoo lol.

We moved back to the STL area in December and were anxious for when we thought Zoe would be ready for a return visit! Josh and I are like giddy kids when it comes to seeing animals. It is rather silly since we end up feeling bad for most of them for being caged up. I do give STL zoo credit for giving the animals more space than most zoos! I have been to some that were pretty bad!

Zoe had learned quite a few ASL signs for several animals in the zoo last fall before we went the first time, so we spent the week brushing up on the ones she knew and adding quite a few more. Once she realized we were actually going to the zoo, she was stoked!!! She just couldn’t wait to see some animals! She wanted to show them what she knew lol. She has matured quite a bit since turning two in June, so we thought she was ready to try again!

With a recently potty trained toddler and an hour drive, we made a mad dash for the entrance so we could get her to the potty before an accident occurred. 😉

After the close call we were ready to venture in! She was pretty convinced that the Malaysian Sun Bears were monkeys lol.

Her favorite exhibits were probably seeing the monkeys, penguins, hippos, and elephants. It would have been better had many of the adults stepped back to allow the small children a chance to see the animals, but it is what it is. I was proud she waited patiently for her turn.

Seeing the penguins was pretty cool because you could actually touch them. Josh said I probably wasn’t suppose to lol, but they didn’t seem to mind the attention. It was by far my favorite exhibit, just because it was SO hot and humid outside!

Needless to say we had a blast today! We also all got quite a workout in walking around the 90 acre park to see as many of the 700 species of animals as we could before Zoe needed a nap. 😉  I was pretty proud of how independent she was today. She was very polite with everyone she spoke with and wanted to walk and explore everything on her own.

Not sure when our precious little baby grew into such a big girl, but we are beaming with pride either way!

Do you have routine family fun days? What types of things do you like to do together? Where do you love to have your family outings?

Get out and get active with your family! Family fun days are a wonderful time to catch up after a busy week and spend some great quality time! Hope you enjoyed your day as much as we did!!!

A day in the life of my toddler ;-)

I always get a lot of questions about what type of lessons plans I do with Zoe. We started Sign language when she was born, but started doing lesson time with her when she was around 6 or 7 months old. With her being so young back then, lesson time consisted mostly of singing, signing, flash cards, reading stories, and very basic motor skills activities such as rolling the ball, playing peek a boo with a blanket, building with blocks, etc. Once she understood the concept of coloring, painting and gluing (around 10mths old) we started doing crafts!

Lesson time quickly became her favorite time of day! We typically spend 2-3 hours 5-6 days a week. Some people think it is awesome we do lesson time, while others criticize. I don’t care whether anyone agrees with her having lesson time. Not only is she learning something new everyday, but she is having a blast learning!

I try to pick a letter, color, shape, and number every other day. It use to be every week, but she is picking up on everything so fast, we will do a couple of each every week. She loves having her work hanging on the wall for everyone to see! She is always so proud 🙂

This is what she has hanging in the kitchen this week!

I try to make everywhere we go a learning experience! From grocery shopping, nature walks, to playing at the park. We use to live near a farm which we frequented twice a week! She really loved that place!!!

She really learned a lot at the farm! From identifying animals, learning the sounds they make, to her colors from looking at tractors and the farm buildings! We are headed to the Zoo this week! Should be a blast!!!

I am truly amazed at the amount of knowledge she has at the age of two! She surprises us daily with something new!!! Her lesson plans now are typically song time in the morning, then she will sit down and color a work sheet and we talk about what the letter of the day is, what sound it makes, what the sign for it is, and what words start with that letter. We then read a story or 2, then work on either a number, color, or shape. After that is activity time. We play games, go for walks, have dance parties, build towers, or drive to the park for play time! I believe being active is just as important as academics! From there is Bible story time, then flash cards. She is free to do whatever she wishes the rest of the day. It sounds like a lot, but it all goes pretty quickly. Being a toddler she really has a short attention span lol

We try to keep learning fun for her! She actually wakes up and asks to do her lessons everyday, which makes me feel awesome, mainly because she wants to learn, but also because it is our bonding time!

I believe a structured day is very important in every child’s life. We are proud of everything she has accomplished so far! At this point, she knows over 150 signs, she can identify her ABC’s, most of her numbers, colors, and shapes! She loves to sing and have me read stories. She also LOVES to dance and do flips lol. I will keep updating periodically how her lessons are going.

What types of activities do you do with your little ones? What are your opinions on having a structured lesson time for a toddler? Do you allow other’s opinions dictate what you do with your children?

It is gym time for this mama! Hope everyone enjoy’s the day!!!! 🙂

The healthy balance of clean eating and indulging.

We have been doing pretty good with eating healthy as well as clean! I do promote a clean diet and eating whole foods. However, everyone has an off day. We are human and do go to BBQ’s, parties, weddings, gatherings etc. I find it funny when people think you are being a hypocrite about clean eating and or healthy eating when you indulge. The subject was brought up when I visited with the Dreamer’s on Friday, then yesterday I saw a post on Facebook by James Wilson, and he couldn’t have put it better! “Fitness is a lifestyle, not a life sentence.”   I agree that 30 seconds of tasty goodness in my mouth is not worth my health or feeling bad when i can’t fit in my favorite jeans however, I will not feel guilty about eating “Junk” in moderation and I don’t believe anyone who does lead a healthier lifestyle should! There should be a balance in your life.

Yesterday, Zoe and I were invited to a BBQ/Birthday party! I knew there was most definitely going to be some “Junk” food there. 🙂 I had actually baked a cake for the birthday boy. Other than the few slices of Bananas on the top of the cake, there was nothing healthy about it lol.

Dark Chocolate cake, soaked in homemade caramel, iced with banana chocolate buttercream, then drizzled with more caramel.

Zoe was very excited about the cake! We arrived and had a wonderful time catching up with old friends/family and celebrating a birthday!!! I had brought some strawberries and veggies sticks so we could munch here and there. I always bring snacks with us! Zoe won’t go anywhere without her berries. She LOVES any kind of berry! She calls them her sports candy.

There were also chips and beer to indulge in, which I will admit, we both did have some chips, but only I indulged in the beer lol.

I actually haven’t indulged in chips or cake since May, so I didn’t mind having some. 😉 I do have a beer or two occasionally. Again, cutting “Junk” out of your normal diet is great, but don’t make it hard for yourself to have a good time at gatherings. I find if you treat it as a diet, you will resent it and stop it all together. I certainly do enjoy living a healthier lifestyle and I do try to steer Zoe away from bad choices, but I also agree that in moderation you can still indulge. There were several other things to eat that were okay as far as healthy goes. They may not have had the cleanest ingredients, but were tasty and not that horrible for us! We made the healthiest choices for our entree as we could and we certainly enjoyed all of it!!!! Granted the Woodruff’s do know their way around a BBQ pit and kitchen, so eating over there is always a treat!!!

Who doesn’t enjoy some grilled BBQ chicken?

Juicy and perfectly cook grilled corn on the cob!

And of course no BBQ would be complete without Devilishly good Deviled eggs!

Zoe even got a manicure from her Aunt while we were there. So as you can see we enjoyed the day!

I try to keep in mind that there is a healthy balance to everything and we try to live by that! Making healthy choices is certainly our goal, but we do enjoy some naughty things as well!

How often do you indulge? Do people make you feel guilty for bringing extra healthy snacks during an outing or for even indulging in the not so good ones? What are your favorite indulgences?

As always I love feedback! I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend as much as our family did!

Planking Duels and Playdates

So like I said yesterday, I was challenged to friendly planking duel with Chris at Traveling Monster and officiating was Courtney from Journey Of A Dreamer. Of course, I accepted!

After a couple of friendly taunts, he was starting to psyche me out lol. I know he and Courtney are avid CrossFitters, so I knew I was gonna have my work cut out for me!  I started to make myself believe he was gonna be some kind of planking freak and go like 5+ minutes! I though for sure I would lose, but I didn’t want it to be by a landslide!!! I had 3 days to get my plank time up by a lot. So as you saw in my last blog I started plank training 😉 I was still planking last night and this morning! My best personal time was 2:48 I am pretty proud of that, but it was SO hard!!!

Last plank before bed lol

We visited for a bit before we got down to the duel. Zoe and Lil Dreamer had never met in person before today! Zoe had only seen pictures of her online. Zoe is in a MINE stage lol everything is hers, that paired with her refusing to take a nap had me a little worried about how she would behave. She was a little possessive of Lil Dreamer’s toys at first, but before we knew it they were screaming, laughing, and jumping on the sofa in the formal sitting room. It was really nice to see her playing with another child she actually likes! We have had several play dates and she always seems to play by herself or seeks an adult or older child to play with instead of the date she was set up on. She had a lot of fun today and was able to squeeze in a 20 min nap on the way home lol. Okay, okay, back to the duel…. after visiting, Chris was ready to throw down. Again, mind you I was a bit nervous of making a fool of myself, but I was ready!!!!

After we assumed our positions, the duel had begun……

The girls played in the background as we planked…..

Little dreamer came to root her daddy on…..

And at 1:34 Chris was out… I was like REALLY?????? Not that 1:34 is anything to shrug off, it is actually an awesome time! I just had it in my head that He was gonna cream me!!!!

Zoe came to check on me. I held out for a bit longer, just because I could lol. I ended at 1:57 🙂 I am not gonna lie though, I was super sore from planking so much over the past few days I was quite glad we didn’t go for longer! That being said, Chris and Courtney, we need to come up with another challenge that all 4 of us can do soon!!!! I had a great time with this and I love that it was a fitness challenge!!!

Getting together with friends, not just for a visit, but for a fitness challenge is always a great way to start the weekend! Do you and your friends push each other to excel? Do you stay active on the weekends? What kind of friendly fitness challenges would you like to see us take on next time?

As always I love to hear back from you, so please leave comments, suggestions, or questions! I hope everyone has a fabulously fit and happy weekend!!!!

It’s a Duel!!!

So I have been challenged by Mrs. Dreamer’s husband from (Journey Of A Dreamer) and (Traveling Monster) to a planking duel!!! We are meeting up tomorrow for the duel as well as letting our little ones have a play date. 😉

I am not gonna lie, I am unsure if I will win this duel. I have no idea how long he can plank for, nor do I know how often he planks. I have eagerly accepted this challenge, because as you may or may not know, I have a bring it on personality!

Some of you may not know what exactly a plank is. It is a position that helps build endurance in your core, or your abs, back, shoulders, chest, and the front and back of your thighs. It looks like this………

It takes quite a bit of core strength as well as endurance to hold this pose. As soon as I had been challenged, I began my training lol. I spend some time in the mornings as well as the evenings in the plank position, trying to get my time up.

Last night Mrs. Dreamer sent a picture of Mr. Dreamer in training to me on Twitter. This had me thinking….Is he one of those people who can plank for like 5mins??? I immediately hopped up and started planking lol. My husband is amused by all of this to say the least! Again, this morning planking on my mind. I am determined to win this fun and spirited duel!!!!

As you can see my dog was not so much in the planking mood ha ha ha . I have to say my daughter has been helping me with my training by constantly laying on my back. 30lb weighted planks are killer!!!! I believe I am as ready as I can get! 🙂 Tomorrow will be interesting as well as fun to say the least!!!

Do you do fun fitness challenges? Do you have friends who push you to do better at things? I hope these fun fitness challenges continue between the Dreamers and I!!!! I will have a Planking duel update tomorrow!!!!!  Hope everyone has an awesome day!!!!
